ARABBA
Dawns that light up rock-faces; deep blue skies broken up only by cloud
or by the ephemeral trails of an aeroplane.
The changing hues of stone cathedrals, frowning grey when the weather
is bad and blushing as the sun rises and sets; becoming black with the
early evening only to pale once again in the radiant whiteness of the
moon. Starry night skies of summer, hidden from the view of the inhabitants
of certain plains and of so many cities. Conifer forests, with timid
inhabitants such as liquid-eyed roe deer, cunning foxes and nervous
hares. Woods teeming with probable, legendary, sprites who speak in
the tongue of the torrents. Lush, green meadows, expanses of grass with
splashes of multi-coloured flowers here and there, spattered with clumps
of rhododendron, right there up on high where towering mountains emerge
from this emerald sea. This is Arabba, with its colours, its fragile
legends, its nature which is as austere as it is unexpectedly benign.
Its sights recount the history of the world, the everyday miracle of
life, with disarming simplicity. Here, where everything happens under
the watchful gaze of God, one can restore the body, regenerate the mind,
nurture the soul.
